MOROCCAN PRINCE HOSTS U.S. HOLOCAUST MUSEUM DIRECTOR, ENDORSES EFFORTS TO EXPAND HOLOCAUST EDUCATION, PROMOTE TOLERANCE AND PLURALISM
RABAT – The Kingdom of Morocco welcomes cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to broaden understanding of the Holocaust to help counter the spread of hate and intolerance, His Highness Prince Moulay Rachid told Museum Director Sara J. Bloomfield in a meeting today.
In his remarks, the prince – brother of King Mohamed VI – supported Ms. Bloomfield’s suggestion to “work together to bring the lessons of the past to address the problems of the present and to make a better tomorrow.”
The prince, who often acts on behalf of the king on important diplomatic issues, received Ms. Bloomfield at his residence in the Moroccan capital. She was joined at the meeting by Mr. Andre Azoulay, Moroccan royal advisor; Mr. Tad Stahnke, director of the Museum’s Initiative on Antisemitism, and Dr. Robert Satloff, director of The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and advisor to the Museum.
In the meeting, Ms. Bloomfield extended an invitation to the King to visit the Museum in Washington and be guest of honor at a special ceremony that would be dedicated to the memory of his late grandfather, Sultan Mohamed V, remembered by the Moroccan Jewish community for his courageous protection of Jews facing Vichy French persecution during World War II.
The visit of the Museum delegation is the most recent step in a decade-long process of building ties with Morocco. In 2007, the Museum signed an agreement for archival exchange and cooperation with the National Library of Morocco, the first-ever accord between a Holocaust memorial institution and an official body in an Arab country.
A living memorial to the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum inspires leaders and citizens worldwide to confront hate, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity. Its far-reaching educational programs and global impact are made possible by generous donors. For more information, visit ushmm.org.
