While its symptoms were recognized by the ancient Egyptians, the early Greek and Roman physicians noted the visual disturbance and described the pain felt across one side of the head. Galen in about 200 A.D. named the disorder migraine derived from the Latin “hemicrania” meaning “half” (hemi) and “skull” (crania).
